Poclain’s MHD09 Motor Raises the Bar for Tree Harvester Productivity
Tooling is far more demanding than ground drive when it comes to motorization. Whether it is tree harvesting, drilling, grinding or shredding, the application generates pressure peaks, constant changes in direction and intensive use of the low displacement mode. Poclain’s HEVO development, which gave birth to the MHD range, worked on harnessing these extreme duty cycles. The first size to hit the market, the MHD09, has proven it increases harvesting productivity by 25%, while increasing durability.
In Scandinavia, forestry harvester operators are always looking to increase productivity to satisfy rising demand. They often work weekends and skip vacation. And it is not for lack of practice – they are seasoned operators, cutting up to 50,000 cubic meters of wood a year. One of them has tested the new MHD09 on his machine and gained 25% in productivity, beating the performance of the MS motor and its competition.
Designed for Harvesting Heads and Tooling Applications
Designed to meet the demands of harvesting heads and other tooling applications, the MHD redefines the core of the MS motor architecture with a new hydrobase, a new shifting system and a new bearing support, bringing exceptional productivity, efficiency and durability.
High Power at High Speed
Tree harvester operators need to work their feed rollers at high speed to reach their productivity targets. They are limited by existing motor technologies, as their torque, power and lifetime drop at high speed. As a result, a standard motor is typically replaced two to three times in the machine’s lifetime. The MHD motor, thanks to its torque module, delivers high power and torque at high speed, matching the harvesting machine’s lifetime.
Minimal Pressure Drop in Low Displacement
The MHD’s streamlined design minimizes the pressure drop. It is 80% lower in small displacement with the MHD09 in comparison to the MSE08, the reference motor on the harvesting head application. The MHD09 can rotate three times faster at a pressure of 30 bar, leading to a jump in productivity.
Faster and More Durable Speed Shifting
A harvesting head typically shifts gears 3,000 times a day – 800,000 times a year. The MHD’s new shifting system can sustain higher pressure, shifting faster and capable of holding up to 10 million actuations, a performance which matches the machine’s lifetime.
Balanced Torque Distibution and Rugged Components
Optimized Torque Distribution
The forces applied inside the MHD torque module are always balanced, as every camlobe and piston is used in high and low displacement, thus reducing the load on the bearing support.
We are extremely proud of the results achieved through the HEVO development and are confident that it will open up significant opportunities for our hydraulic solutions in the heavy-duty applications of tomorrow
Enhanced Components Durability
The MHD is designed for harsher working conditions and is more resistant to cavitation.
The technology breakthroughs Poclain has integrated to the MHD range will set new productivity and profitability levels in tree harvesting, but not only. Its combination of high power capability at high speed and exceptional efficiency and lifetime are likely to appeal to other heavy-duty applications, such as directional drills, shredders, plastic moulding machines, and more.
“We are extremely proud of the results achieved through the HEVO development and are confident that it will open up significant opportunities for our hydraulic solutions in the heavy-duty applications of tomorrow” concludes Rami Farah, MHD Project Manager.
