Terri's Lightweight Forestry Machine Sports Poclain Motors
Tree harvesting can be carried out with a feather-light footprint, and it is what is driving the growth of the Swedish OEM Terri, whose sales turnover has increased four-fold since 2020. Their Terri 3 six-ton forestry machine, dedicated to thinning, is lightweight, rugged, and nimble. Equipped with eight Poclain motors in its wheeled version, it thrives in all weather and ground conditions.
Sustainability and reliability are Terri’s core values
Tree harvesters are at the centre of the wood processing industry. Their owners invest heavily to purchase one and use it extensively, with no backup plan if they break down. For forest owners they are also a source of revenue, as well as a potential threat for their land’s sustainability. Tree harvesters can scar to the soil, trample the undergrowth, and alter rainwater courses. Terri understands what is at stake and has optimized their third generation of machines to provide outstanding reliability and minimal soil impact. The Terri 3 forestry machine features eight independently controlled Poclain MSE08 motors mounted on four bogies, allowing it to navigate terrain variations without causing harm.
Eight Poclain motors for outstanding adherence
"The Terri 3 provides optimal maneuverability" says Arne Isaksson, Terri Sales and Marketing Director.
The mastermind behind the machine’s unique transmission is HydX, an expert in automation and hydraulic systems. For the Terri 3, they opted for an open-loop circuit integrating a controller and an eight-section manifold block. It provides a constant differential to the wheels without a flow divider and a meter in/ meter out function to handle downhill without counterbalance valves.
The machine provides an outstanding pull force and handles every bump and dip in the terrain without skidding. It can go everywhere and doesn’t need a road to get to the harvest zone. It can also make tight turns without marking the soil, as the controller adjusts the speed of each wheel according to its trajectory. What’s more, its axle-free undercarriage provides a 70 cm (28 in) ground clearance, facilitating movement over obstacles like rocks and stumps.
Besides the technology, Poclain and Hydx have supported Terri in sizing and fine-tuning the transmission.
"Poclain and Hydx encouraged us to build a test track on our premises to test the machine’s performance, and we were very impressed" says Arne.
Terri has gained prominence by creating lightweight, sustainable, and reliable forestry machines and they plan to go further in their next model. Using data collected on their current working machines, they are developing a range of driving modes based on ground and weather conditions. They also want to eliminate every bottleneck in the transmission to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Poclain’s engineering teams are committed to supporting them with their technology and expertise.
